Description:

The refuge is located at an altitude of 2298 metres, at the foot of the moraine of the Presanella glacier (Rhaetian Alps). Above the terrace on which the refuge stands there is a typical alpine lake, very suggestive when the clear sky allows its waters to reflect the Presanella in all its beauty.
Continuing by car after the village of Vermiglio in the direction of Velon, you come to the junction with the dirt road, recently repaired, which leads to the former Forte Pozzi Alti (m.1884). The road is about 6.2 km long and is accessible to everyone without the need for any permit. Those who wish to walk along this stretch can avoid following the road altogether, taking the SAT path no. 233 which, cutting across the hairpin bends, leads to the former Forte Pozzi Alti in about 1.30 hours. From the high-altitude “car park” you can reach the refuge in about 1.15 hours thanks to the comfortable and fascinating SAT path no. 233. This path has only a 400 m difference in height and is very suggestive, in fact it is a former Austrian mule track of the First World War that crosses a tunnel passing under a small waterfall.

In addition to the ascent to Cima Presanella (mountaineering) and the traverses to the other refuges, which are demanding, there are the following possibilities: Sentiero dei Todeschi (SAT path 206)

A beautiful round trip, starting and returning to the refuge, passing by the lake. You reach the front of the glacier where you can observe its changes and take some nice pictures. Return to the base along an easy path, duration about 2 hours.
Passo dei Pozzi.

This is a variant that allows you to reach the car without having to go back along the same path. The Passo dei Pozzi is reached, which despite being “only” 2600 metres high, offers a spectacular view of the Bernina and Vioz peaks. Climbing up among edelweiss, with a little luck you may see chamois, ibex and maybe even a golden eagle. Descending from the northern slope, an Austrian mule track from the First World War leads back to Forte Pozzi Alti.
