Lake Molveno in Trentino is a natural alpine lake that was formed around 4,000 years ago by a massive landslide. From 2011 to 2018 it received the prestigious ‘5 sails’ environmental quality label from Legambiente and was awarded the title of ‘Italy’s most beautiful lake’ in 2014, thanks to its exceptional water quality, beaches, services and safety. It is the second largest lake in Trentino, after Lake Caldonazzo, and reaches a maximum depth of 123 metres.
The northern part of the lake, where the village of Molveno is located, extends towards the lake with flat meadows and beaches, known as the ‘Lido di Molveno’, which attract many tourists during the summer. The path around Lake Molveno is an enchanting walk suitable for everyone, a long trek that takes more than three hours to complete. The path originates from the small beach at the lake, where a small bridge leads to the main path that enters the lush natural surroundings, finally leading back to the starting point after about 10 km.
Since 1957, the waters of the lake have fed the Santa Massenza hydroelectric power station, and approximately every 10 years it is drained almost completely to allow for maintenance of the Nembia hydroelectric power station, including the hydraulic systems and the outlet tunnel.
